ECOWAS to Scrap All Air Ticket Taxes by 2026

West Africa is preparing for a major shift in regional travel as the ECOWAS Commission confirms that all air ticket taxes will end by January 1, 2026. This policy targets the long-standing challenge of high flight costs across the region. It also supports a broader plan to improve mobility, trade, and tourism.
ECOWAS officials revealed that years of research exposed West Africa as the continent’s costliest air travel zone. These high prices come mainly from government taxes and aviation charges. Such fees conflict with global aviation guidelines and weaken demand for regional flights.
Heads of State first reviewed the issue during the 2023 Summit in Abuja. They later approved a supplementary act in December 2024 to enforce major changes. Under this reform, member states must remove air transport taxes and cut aviation charges by 25 percent.
Four major taxes, including the security tax, will disappear because they lack clear links to aviation services. ECOWAS believes that this step will attract more travellers and boost regional industries.
Officials highlighted that current ticket prices burden traders and frequent travellers. Many passengers pay thousands of dollars on regional routes due to heavy tax layers. The new policy aims to ease this pressure and increase travel activity.
ECOWAS is also working with airlines to guarantee that fare reductions reach travellers. The Commission wants carriers to reflect all cost changes in ticket prices. This collaboration should help West African airlines grow and become more competitive.
Leaders expect the reform to spark economic growth and expand government revenue through increased demand. The measure also promises easier movement for citizens and stronger regional integration.
