Nigeria’s maritime sector continues to attract significant foreign investment, reinforcing the country’s expanding blue economy. Recently, Denmark disclosed investments exceeding $1.2 billion in Nigerian ports through APM Terminals. This development reflects growing international confidence in Nigeria’s maritime potential and infrastructure reforms.
The Danish Ambassador to Nigeria, Jens Hansen, revealed this during a courtesy visit to the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, in Abuja. During the meeting, Hansen confirmed plans for additional investments aimed at expanding port operations nationwide. He also congratulated Nigeria on its election into Category C of the International Maritime Organisation Council.
According to the ambassador, the IMO Council membership strengthens Nigeria’s voice in global maritime policy. It also enables active participation in decisions on maritime safety, security, and environmental protection. Hansen expressed confidence in Nigeria’s leadership and its ability to influence regional maritime cooperation.
Furthermore, he highlighted shared interests between Denmark and Nigeria in marine and blue economy development. He noted Denmark’s expertise in wind energy and green maritime technologies. Consequently, Denmark offered to share knowledge supporting Nigeria’s sustainable maritime initiatives.
In response, Oyetola welcomed deeper collaboration with Danish investors. He described Denmark as a valued maritime partner and assured investors of a stable business environment. He also commended APM Terminals’ contributions to Apapa and Onne ports modernization.
The minister outlined ongoing reforms including port upgrades, inland waterway revitalization, and enhanced maritime security. Notably, piracy has been eliminated in Nigerian waters. These efforts aim to boost trade, create jobs, and position Nigeria as Africa’s leading maritime hub.
