Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed has officially resigned from the Labour Party. He announced this decision during a live appearance on a political programme. Furthermore, he confirmed plans to join the Peoples Redemption Party immediately. Baba-Ahmed cited internal conflicts as a major reason for his exit. He also highlighted a clear shift from the party’s original vision.
According to him, the party no longer reflects its founding principles. In addition, he alleged interference in opposition politics by the ruling government. He claimed certain individuals were positioned to frustrate his political efforts. Consequently, he found it difficult to operate effectively within the party.
Moreover, Baba-Ahmed accused the government of weakening opposition parties. He argued that governance should focus on security and economic stability. However, he believes political suppression has become a priority instead. He confirmed his resignation would take effect at midnight.
Afterward, he declared the Peoples Redemption Party as his new platform. He described the party as historically grounded and ideologically consistent. Looking ahead, he plans to support a credible southern candidate. He also suggested the candidate could emerge from a Christian background.
This move aligns with his vision for the 2027 elections. When asked about presidential ambition, he remained noncommittal. Nevertheless, he expressed satisfaction with his past political achievements. He emphasized that leadership goes beyond titles and positions. Ultimately, his move signals shifting dynamics within Nigeria’s opposition politics.
