The Dangote Group has announced a major expansion of its petroleum refinery. The facility will reach 1.4 million barrels per day capacity. According to the company, the project will create about 95,000 skilled jobs at peak construction. Aliko Dangote disclosed this during an induction ceremony in Lagos. He was honoured by the Nigerian Academy of Engineering.
Meanwhile, he described the expansion as a key milestone for industrial growth. He emphasized the group’s commitment to engineering excellence and job creation. Additionally, he highlighted its focus on sustainable economic development. Dangote explained that the project will heavily depend on Nigerian professionals. Engineers, technicians, and artisans will gain significant opportunities. Consequently, local expertise will play a central role in execution.
Furthermore, the expanded refinery will become the world’s largest facility. It will surpass India’s Jamnagar refinery upon completion. This achievement will strengthen Nigeria’s global refining position. In addition, the project will stimulate local manufacturing and innovation. It will also enhance technology transfer across sectors. As a result, Nigeria’s oil and gas value chain will deepen.
Moreover, the expansion will improve fuel security nationwide. It will reduce dependence on imported petroleum products. Consequently, the economy will benefit from foreign exchange savings. Dangote stressed confidence in Nigeria’s engineering capacity. He noted Africa can deliver world-class infrastructure standards. Therefore, the project reflects long-term industrial ambition.
The Nigerian Academy of Engineering praised the initiative. Professor Rahamon Bello said it inspires future innovators. He noted its influence extends beyond physical infrastructure. Currently, the refinery operates at 650,000 barrels per day. However, Dangote plans to scale it within three years.
