Michael Carrick is reportedly the frontrunner to become Manchester United’s caretaker head coach. Sources reveal United aim to finalise an appointment before players resume training Wednesday. The 44-year-old has progressed through discussions, though no official decision has been confirmed.
Carrick previously served as temporary manager in 2021 after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s dismissal. During that brief spell, he oversaw two wins and one draw in three matches. He stepped aside once Ralf Rangnick was appointed as interim manager at Old Trafford. Solskjaer also met with the club over a potential return on Saturday.
However, Carrick’s prior caretaker experience and club familiarity give him a competitive edge. United sacked Ruben Amorim on January 5, ending his 14-month tenure as head coach. Darren Fletcher temporarily managed the team, expected to step aside following an FA Cup loss.
Carrick enjoyed a notable playing career, making 464 appearances from 2006 to 2018. He joined United from Tottenham under Sir Alex Ferguson and became a key midfield figure. Upon retirement, Carrick joined Jose Mourinho’s coaching staff in 2018 and remained under Solskjaer.
His only permanent managerial role was at Middlesbrough, leading them to the Championship play-offs. Carrick narrowly missed the top six in consecutive campaigns before his dismissal last June. United value his deep understanding of the club and dressing-room dynamics for stability.
