Maresca Sparks Controversy
Jamie Carragher believes Enzo Maresca has created a “big problem” with his recent comments. He does not expect the head coach to remain at Chelsea next season.
Maresca caused confusion after saying the two days before Chelsea’s win over Everton were “the worst 48 hours” since he joined last summer. This came after a 2-1 defeat to Atalanta, leaving Chelsea without a win in four games.
The Italian gave little clarification before the Carabao Cup quarter-final against Cardiff, fueling speculation that he was targeting the club’s owners and sporting directors.
Power Struggle at Chelsea
Carragher described the situation as a “power play” that rarely ends well for managers. He suggested Maresca feels he deserves more authority after recent successes, including Champions League qualification, winning a European trophy, and the Club World Cup.
“The problem for Maresca is if he continues like this, there will only be one winner, and it’s not him,” Carragher said.
Maresca’s Coaching Ability
Despite the controversy, Carragher praised Maresca’s tactical skills. He said the head coach can compete with top managers like Pep Guardiola. Maresca has performed strongly in both the Premier League and Champions League.
“Where could Maresca go that is better than Chelsea? I’m not sure,” Carragher added.
Sky Sports Analysis
Kaveh Solhekol reported tensions behind the scenes at Chelsea. Maresca refused to clarify who he meant by “many people did not support” him after the Atalanta loss, confirming he wasn’t talking about fans.
By elimination, the comments are aimed at Chelsea’s leadership, including co-sporting directors Paul Winstanley and Laurence Stewart. Maresca initially accepted the club’s structure but now feels unsupported.
Solhekol added that going public is a risky move: “There is usually only one winner in situations like this, and it’s often not the manager or head coach.”
