Residents of Calabar, the capital of Cross River State, have praised Governor Bassey Otu for launching the “Xmas Free Transport Service,” describing it as a huge relief against the high cost of transportation during the festive season.
Governor Otu launched the free bus service on December 1, 2025, as part of his administration’s “People First” agenda, aiming to cushion the effects of economic hardship and assist residents and visitors with movement across the state.
Significant Relief for Residents
Residents lauded the initiative for making movement around the Calabar metropolis easy and cost-free during the Christmas season.
- Ukomma Sampson, a resident, noted, “Since this free bus came into existence, I have not paid for transportation. And this has really helped us to save our money.”
- Mary Obi, a Calabar South trader, commended the governor, saying, “This is the first time in years that I can travel back home after sales with ease. I will just carry my loads and take a free bus and they will take me to my house for free.”
Traders at the popular Watt market described the initiative as “a deliberate effort to assist the poor masses.”
Calls for Expansion
While praising the initiative, some residents called for its expansion and sustainability:
- Effiom Ekeng, a father of four, urged the state government to extend the free bus service beyond Calabar to other parts of the state, including Ikom, Obubra, and Obudu.
• • Pascal Ijom called on the government to also address the high cost of rent in the capital city to create a better economic balance.
