Cagliari forward Yael Trepy has regained consciousness and been taken off mechanical ventilation after being rescued unconscious from a swimming pool in Sardinia.
The 20-year-old was airlifted to hospital on Sunday after getting into difficulty while swimming with friends at a villa.
Trepy was initially placed in a medically induced coma and connected to a ventilator following the incident. His condition subsequently improved, allowing doctors to gradually reduce his sedation and respiratory support.
A medical update from Santissima Annunziata Civil Hospital in Sassari confirmed that the young footballer had fully regained consciousness.
Doctors said Trepy was alert and cooperative and showed no obvious neurological deficits following his recovery from the induced coma.
He remains in intensive care and is being closely monitored by medical professionals.
Earlier reports indicated that Trepy had become fever-free and that his respiratory function had improved from the severe condition recorded when he was admitted.
The incident reportedly occurred after the player reached a section of the pool where he could no longer touch the bottom.
Trepy had been given the weekend off with his Cagliari teammates following the club’s 1-0 Coppa Italia victory over Arezzo, in which he played 54 minutes.
He made eight Serie A appearances for Cagliari last season and scored once. He joined the club’s academy in 2022 after beginning his youth career with US Creteil-Lusitanos in France.
Although his recovery represents a significant improvement, Trepy remains under intensive medical supervision.
