President Bola Tinubu has accepted the resignation of the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, and appointed Tunji Disu as Acting IGP with immediate effect.
In a statement issued in Abuja by presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga, the President said Egbetokun resigned due to pressing family considerations. Tinubu commended his decades of service to the Nigeria Police Force, praising his professionalism and efforts to strengthen internal security.
Egbetokun, appointed in June 2023, was serving a four-year term scheduled to end in June 2027 under the amended Police Act 2020.
Tinubu said Disu’s experience and operational depth would provide steady leadership amid prevailing security challenges. In line with the law, the President will convene the Nigeria Police Council to consider Disu’s appointment as substantive IGP before forwarding his name to the Senate for confirmation.
The President reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to enhancing national security and strengthening institutional capacity within the police force.
