Residents of Yelwata in Benue State have renewed calls for urgent government protection and humanitarian assistance following the deadly June 2025 massacre that left over 200 people dead.
The appeal comes as Thomas Rachel, Germany’s Federal Government Commissioner for Freedom of Religion or Belief, reaffirmed his country’s commitment to supporting Nigeria in tackling insecurity and promoting peaceful coexistence.
Speaking in Abuja after a fact-finding visit, Rachel described his trip as emotional, noting that survivors remain fearful and uncertain about their future.
The attack, carried out by heavily armed assailants, displaced about 3,000 residents and destroyed homes in the farming community located in Guma Local Government Area.
Rachel emphasised that both Christians and Muslims are victims of extremist violence, urging unity against terrorism.
He also highlighted concerns over human rights violations linked to the application of blasphemy laws in parts of northern Nigeria.
Germany, he said, would continue to support Nigeria through peace-building initiatives, dialogue promotion, and advisory military cooperation without direct troop deployment.
