A speeding DYNA truck collided with a commercial tricycle on Wednesday, May 28, 2025, along Mbiabong Road, near the Itu-Calabar Road in Akwa Ibom State, killing six people, including three men, one woman, and two children.
Truck Driver Flees Scene After Causing Fatal Crash
The truck, which had no visible license plate, rammed into the tricycle with registration number DUU407WZ. Witnesses said the truck driver fled immediately after the crash, leaving the victims behind before officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) arrived.
FRSC Confirms Tragic Incident and Responds Quickly
The FRSC Sector Commander in Akwa Ibom, Assistant Corps Marshal Edward Odiete, confirmed the accident in an official statement. FRSC officers arrived promptly, evacuated the victims, and cleared the wreckage to restore traffic flow.
“Drivers could have avoided this tragedy if they had followed basic safety precautions,” Odiete said.
“We urge all motorists to obey traffic regulations to prevent such heartbreaking incidents.”
Eyewitnesses Cite Speeding and Brake Failure
Eyewitnesses claimed that the truck lost control due to excessive speed and brake failure before hitting the tricycle. The crash left six out of the seven people involved dead at the scene.
FRSC Urges Safer Driving Across Akwa Ibom
FRSC officials transported the bodies to a nearby morgue and launched an investigation to locate the driver. The agency also reiterated its commitment to enforcing road safety measures across Akwa Ibom.
Road Safety Advocates Demand Accountability
Road safety advocates have called on authorities to track down the driver and prosecute him for abandoning the accident scene. They also urged the government to tighten checks on commercial vehicles, especially those operating without registration plates.
