Nigeria’s campaign at the 2026 African Men’s Handball Championship suffered an early setback on Sunday. The Golden Arrows lost narrowly to Angola in their first main round match. The encounter took place at the Kigali BK Arena in Rwanda. As a result, Nigeria’s semi-final hopes now face a tougher path.
Earlier, Nigeria had enjoyed an impressive group stage performance. They topped Group A with strong wins over Algeria, Zambia, and Rwanda. Most notably, they defeated seven-time champions Algeria in a thrilling contest. Consequently, the team entered the main round with high confidence.
However, Angola started the match with greater intensity and control. Nigeria struggled defensively and trailed 11–14 at halftime. Although the Arrows improved after the break, Angola maintained their lead. Nigeria converted five of seven penalties, but Angola remained flawless from the spot.
Meanwhile, discipline played a key role throughout the game. Nigeria received two yellow cards and one red card. In contrast, Angola avoided major sanctions and stayed composed. Both teams used timeouts tactically during critical moments.
Despite the loss, Nigeria’s qualification hopes remain alive. The tournament format allows the top two teams to reach the semi-finals. Additionally, the fifth-placed team can still qualify for the 2027 IHF Men’s World Championship. Therefore, all is not lost for the Golden Arrows.
Looking ahead, Nigeria will face defending champions Egypt in their final main round fixture. This match will be decisive for their progression chances. Historically, Nigeria’s best finish came in 1998 with a fourth-place result. Now, the team hopes to rewrite history and keep their global ambitions alive.
