Governor Alex Otti has launched a ₦306 million technology-driven business grant initiative known as NKATA to empower entrepreneurs and small businesses across the 17 local government areas of Abia State. The programme aims to strengthen youth empowerment, reduce unemployment, and promote sustainable economic growth through innovation and technology.
Speaking during the unveiling of the initiative alongside the management team of the Abia State Technology Skills Acquisition Centre, Otti reiterated his administration’s dedication to creating long-term economic opportunities for residents. According to him, the intervention was intentionally structured to ensure inclusiveness by accommodating various categories of beneficiaries across the state.
The governor explained that although ₦306 million has already been set aside for the project, only qualified applicants who meet the outlined requirements would benefit from the scheme. He expressed optimism that the initiative would generate positive outcomes through job creation, poverty reduction, and increased business productivity.
Furthermore, Otti stressed that his administration chose to invest in productive ventures instead of funding consumption-based programmes. He noted that investments capable of generating returns and creating employment opportunities would have a more lasting impact on the state’s economy.
Meanwhile, Director-General of ATSAC, Mr. Peter Ukonu, described NKATA as a strategic intervention designed to support businesses through technology providers rather than direct cash distribution. According to him, the approach would ensure that beneficiaries utilise the resources strictly for business expansion, innovation, and improved productivity across Abia State.
