Call to Action on Child Safety
The First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has urged all Nigerians to protect children from sexual exploitation and abuse. She made the statement in Abuja on Tuesday, during the World Day for the Prevention of and Healing from Child Sexual Exploitation and Sexual Abuse 2025.
Theme Focuses on Evidence-Based Protection
This year’s theme is “Strengthening the Protection of Children Against Sexual Exploitation and Sexual Abuse Through Evidence-Based Policy Making.” It highlights the need for informed strategies to safeguard children.
Shared Responsibility for Child Safety
Mrs. Tinubu said child safety is a shared responsibility. She called on parents, civil society, government agencies, and religious and traditional leaders to work together. Children should grow up in safe environments.
“We must ensure every child grows up free from fear and harm,” she said. “Protecting children needs more than words. It requires action guided by data, research, and good policies. May God protect all our children.”
Global Significance of the World Day
The World Day for the Prevention of and Healing from Child Sexual Exploitation and Sexual Abuse is observed every November 18. The Council of Europe established it in 2015 to encourage global action against child sexual abuse. It calls for prevention, prosecution, and support for victims.
UN Recognition and Awareness Efforts
In 2022, the United Nations officially recognized the day. The move aims to raise awareness, promote understanding, and reduce the stigma around child sexual abuse.
