President Bola Tinubu has urged the Super Eagles to maintain their momentum. And push confidently toward securing their spot at the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. His encouragement came shortly after Nigeria’s emphatic 4–1 victory over Gabon in Thursday’s African playoff clash.
Nigeria’s win did not come easily. Although Akor Adams broke the deadlock in the 78th minute. Th Eagles were stunned when Mario Lemina’s deflected effort found the net with only a minute remaining in regulation time.
However, the team quickly regained control in extra time. Chidera Ejuke struck early to restore Nigeria’s lead with his first goal for the national team. Setting the stage for Victor Osimhen to seal the outcome with a brilliant brace. His two goals lifted his international tally to an impressive 31 in 45 appearances.
Following the dramatic triumph, Tinubu shared his admiration on X. Praising the squad’s determination and encouraging them to stay focused until the qualification mission is complete. His message resonated across the country, especially after a tense week in which the team faced a bonus dispute with the Nigeria Football Federation, leading to a temporary training boycott and leaving the squad with only one full session before the match.
Looking ahead, the Super Eagles will confront either DR Congo or Cameroon in Sunday’s decisive final. The winner will earn a place in the intercontinental playoff scheduled for March 2026 in Mexico, where two additional World Cup tickets will be contested. Since Nigeria narrowly missed automatic qualification earlier in the campaign, the playoffs represent their final gateway to the tournament.
With renewed confidence, a united squad, and growing national support, the Super Eagles are poised to chase their World Cup dream with even greater resolve.
