The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Abbas Tajudeen, on Tuesday officially swore in three newly elected lawmakers following their victory in the August 16, 2025 bye-elections. The ceremony took place at the National Assembly, marking a significant step in restoring full representation in the Green Chamber.
The new legislators are among five candidates elected to fill vacant seats that emerged after the death of four members and the nomination of Dennis Idahosa as the running mate to Senator Monday Okpebholo in the 2024 Edo governorship election.
The House had earlier suffered the loss of four members in 2024 due to illness, including Ekene Adams (Kaduna), Isa Dogonyaro (Jigawa), and Olaide Akinremi (Oyo). Another member, Oriyomi Onanuga, passed away in 2025. These unfortunate incidents left several federal constituencies unrepresented, prompting the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to organize bye-elections in the affected states in August.
During the polls, the All Progressives Congress (APC) secured four out of the five vacant seats, while the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) claimed one.
Those sworn in by Speaker Abbas include Omosede Igbinedion (Ovia South/Ovia West/Ovia North-East Federal Constituency, Edo State), Joseph Bagudu (Chikun/Kajuru Federal Constituency, Kaduna State), and Mukhtar Rabiu (Garki/Babura Federal Constituency, Jigawa State).
However, Elegbeji Ayola, who won the Sagamu/Ikenne/Remo North Federal Constituency seat in Ogun State, and Oyekunle Sunday, who won the Ibadan North seat in Oyo State, were notably absent. No official reason was provided for their absence.
Of the five newly elected lawmakers, Oyekunle Sunday remains the only representative from the PDP, while the others strengthen the majority held by the APC in the House of Representatives.
