Cole Palmer insists Chelsea’s Champions League campaign is not a “learning curve”, stressing that the Blues want to compete immediately despite a 3-1 defeat to Bayern Munich in their group opener at the Allianz Arena.
The clash marked Chelsea’s first appearance in the competition since April 2023. While Bayern’s experience told, with goals coming after defensive lapses, Palmer underlined the team’s ambition:
“We are not coming here for it to be a learning curve. We have shown tonight we want to compete and we want to do as best as we can,” the England forward said.
Head coach Enzo Maresca admitted his young side lacked focus “for the full 95 minutes” but said the match would help them “build something special.”
Chelsea created chances early on, with Pedro Neto and Enzo Fernández going close, but defensive errors proved costly. Trevoh Chalobah’s own goal, a foul by Moises Caicedo on Harry Kane for a penalty, and a late mistake by Malo Gusto allowed Bayern to punish them. Palmer briefly pulled one back before Kane sealed victory.
The defeat highlighted Chelsea’s inexperience. The squad had just 117 Champions League appearances combined, compared to Bayern keeper Manuel Neuer’s 151 alone. Eight Chelsea players, including Caicedo and Joao Pedro, were making their debuts in the competition.
Former Chelsea forward Pat Nevin said: “It wasn’t quite men against boys, but Bayern Munich were certainly a good distance ahead of Chelsea. The mistakes were naive, but this level is elite. The jump may take them a little while.”
Maresca, also making his first Champions League outing as a head coach, will need to adapt quickly if Chelsea are to make an impact this season.
