Da’velle Smith is embracing growth and learning as he carries forward the proud tradition of Detroit’s legendary Kronk Gym.
Smith (13-0, 8 KOs), from Taylor, Michigan, returns to action on Saturday at the Fox Theater in Detroit. The 25-year-old super middleweight, signed to Salita Promotions, trains under “Sugarhill” Steward in Florida after coming up through Kronk’s system.
In his last fight, Smith moved up in weight and earned an eight-round unanimous decision over Martez McGregor. Now, he’s focused on steady improvement.
“At this point, I feel there is always something to learn. That is the fun in it,” Smith told BoxingScene.
Smith called his last camp with Steward “one of the best” he’s ever had, picking up lessons in everything from footwork to the finer details of preparation. His goal is to break into the top 20 rankings at super middleweight by December 2026.
He sparred with Vladimir Shishkin, who has fought twice for a world title. Smith credits Shishkin’s relentless work ethic, dating back to when he first saw him train at Kronk in 2019, as an inspiration for his own discipline.
Looking ahead, Smith hopes to reach the sport’s highest levels while continuing Kronk’s storied legacy.
“This fight is important because it is going to elevate me. If I do good, I could fight again before the end of the year. Every fight has to be treated like a championship fight.”
