An Osogbo Magistrate Court has remanded one Oruhu Odey for allegedly impersonating a lawyer, forging the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) seal, and defrauding a businessman of N18.5 million.
The police accused Odey of parading himself as a lawyer between December 2020 and May 2021, during which he deceived a victim into paying for two houses at Oroki Estate, Osogbo. He was also said to have forged the NBA stamp and seal, which he used in a petition sent to the Ogun State Commissioner of Police.
Prosecutor Saheed Anifowose told the court that the offences contravened several sections of the Criminal Code. Odey pleaded not guilty to the four counts of impersonation, fraud, stealing, and forgery.
Magistrate Dr. Segun Ayilara adjourned the case till October 21 for mention and ordered Odey’s remand in the Ilesa Correctional Centre.
The case highlights Nigeria’s recurring problem of fake lawyers. In recent years, the NBA has raised concerns over impostors forging its seals to defraud unsuspecting people, prompting the association to introduce additional security features. Similar arrests, including that of Emmanuel Odeh in August, show that the menace remains widespread.
