The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has openly criticised striker Cyriel Dessers and faulted captain William Troost-Ekong following the Super Eagles’ 1-1 draw with South Africa in Tuesday’s 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier in Bloemfontein.
The Super Eagles, desperate for a win to revive their fading hopes of reaching the tournament in North America, suffered early setbacks that ultimately cost them valuable points.
Early Setbacks Against South Africa
Defender Ola Aina limped off in the 8th minute, disrupting Nigeria’s rhythm. Things worsened in the 25th minute when Troost-Ekong turned the ball into his own net, handing Bafana Bafana the lead.
Just before halftime, Calvin Bassey equalised with a firm header after linking up with Fisayo Dele-Bashiru, restoring some hope for Nigeria.
NFF Criticises Dessers’ Performance
In its post-match statement, NFF’s Director of Communications, Dr Ademola Olajire, singled out Dessers for a poor display.
“Cyriel Dessers, who had an unimpressive game in Uyo, did not improve in Bloemfontein. He was too slow to latch onto passes, failed to win aerial duels, and struggled to spark the attack,” the federation stated.
Dessers, who was substituted at half-time, once again failed to convince as Nigeria’s lead striker.
Ekong Also Faulted for Own Goal
The NFF also criticised team captain Troost-Ekong for his costly own goal.
“The Super Eagles’ fighting spirit was diminished after William Ekong inadvertently swept the ball into his own net in the 25th minute, wrong-footing Stanley Nwabali,” the statement read.
Praise for Bassey’s Fighting Spirit
Amid the criticism, the federation reserved praise for Calvin Bassey, who showed determination and resilience to bring Nigeria level before halftime.
“Defender Calvin Bassey showed immense fighting spirit when he surged forward, connected with Dele-Bashiru’s cross, and headed home the equaliser,” the NFF added.
Eagles Fail to Capitalise in the Second Half
Despite dominating possession after the break, Nigeria lacked sharpness in the final third. Substitutes Tolu Arokodare, Samuel Chukwueze, and Chrisantus Uche were unable to unlock South Africa’s defence, leaving the match at 1-1.
The NFF lamented that the team “delivered little” in the second half, wasting chances that could have turned the game in their favour.
Group C Standings: Nigeria’s Slim Chances
The draw leaves Nigeria with 11 points from eight games, while South Africa remain top of Group C with 17 points.
To keep their World Cup hopes alive, the Super Eagles must defeat Lesotho and Benin Republic in their remaining qualifiers — and hope rivals drop points along the way.
