Former Rivers State Governor and ex-Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, has reaffirmed his ambition to run for president in the 2027 Nigerian general elections on the platform of the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Amaechi disclosed his decision on Wednesday during an interactive session with journalists in Kano State after meeting with a coalition of traders. He emphasized that he would not step aside for any other aspirant in the party’s presidential primary election.
“I will contest the ADC presidential primary, and by God’s grace, I hope to win so that I can face Tinubu in 2027. I am not stepping down for anyone. Let the people decide who they want to lead,” Amaechi declared.
Amaechi Calls for Internal Democracy in ADC
The former governor urged the ADC to maintain an open and competitive contest, stressing that internal democracy was essential to strengthening the party ahead of 2027.
According to him, Nigerians are increasingly disillusioned with the Bola Tinubu administration, citing rising hardship, economic uncertainty, and widespread dissatisfaction.
“Whether the government wants to conduct credible elections or not, one thing is certain—time is up. Nigerians are tired because no one is happy under Tinubu, not even in Rivers or across the South. People are suffering everywhere,” he said.
Criticism of Tinubu’s Appointments
Amaechi also faulted the federal government’s approach to political appointments, claiming that only individuals close to President Tinubu had been rewarded. He argued that genuine inclusion had been neglected, leaving many regions and stakeholders dissatisfied.
On the issue of zoning within the ADC, he maintained that while the final decision rested with the party leadership, he would remain in the race regardless of zoning arrangements.

Positioning himself as one of the most credible contenders, Amaechi boldly compared his political experience and preparedness to that of the current president.
“If you look at all those aspiring, including Tinubu, who is better prepared than I am? My candidacy offers unity because I come from the South, and we are not in conflict with any region,” he asserted.
Rivers State Politics: Amaechi vs Wike
When asked about the influence of Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), on Rivers politics, Amaechi dismissed claims that his political base had weakened.
He recounted his recent visit to Rivers State to inaugurate the ADC chapter, describing the massive turnout as a testament to his enduring grassroots support.
“Recently, when I visited Rivers to inaugurate the ADC, the turnout was massive from the airport to the venue, and nobody paid for that mobilisation. That should tell you where the people stand,” he said.

Amaechi’s declaration sets the stage for a potentially heated 2027 presidential election. With his strong political background as a two-term governor, former minister, and experienced party strategist, his entry into the ADC race could reshape the opposition landscape.
For now, all eyes will be on the ADC primaries, where Amaechi insists he is ready to battle it out without compromise.
