The Federal Government has announced a major subsidy on dialysis treatment across select federal hospitals in Nigeria, bringing relief to thousands of kidney patients.
According to the Special Adviser to the President on Policy Information, Daniel Bwala, the initiative has already taken effect in several federal medical centres and teaching hospitals. He explained that the subsidy reflects President Tinubu’s commitment to affordable healthcare and easing the financial burden on Nigerians.
Federal Hospitals Offering Subsidised Dialysis
Dialysis treatment at reduced rates is now available at:
- FMC Ebute-Metta, Lagos
- FMC Jabi, Abuja
- University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan
- FMC Owerri, Imo
- University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH), Borno
- FMC Abeokuta, Ogun
- Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH)
- FMC Azare, Bauchi
- University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH), Edo
- University of Calabar Teaching Hospital (UCTH), Cross River
More federal hospitals are expected to be added before the end of the year.
Part of a Broader Healthcare Reform
The dialysis subsidy is one of several new measures under the Tinubu administration’s healthcare strategy. Other programmes include:
- Establishment of oncology and diagnostic centres
- Retraining of 120,000 frontline health workers
- Redesign of the Basic Health Care Provision Fund (BHCPF)
- Free Caesarean sections for vulnerable pregnant women in federal hospitals
A Lifeline for Kidney Patients
Healthcare advocates have long pushed for reduced dialysis costs, as many patients abandon treatment due to high expenses. With this subsidy, thousands of Nigerians battling kidney failure are expected to access life-saving treatment.
“This is not just policy,” Bwala stated. “It is about saving lives and restoring dignity to Nigerian families.”
