The city of Abuja is currently buzzing with activity as over 1,000 athletes from 31 African countries have arrived for the 2025 African Karate Championship, scheduled to hold from July 21 to July 28.
The high-profile continental event will feature intense competition across four categories: Cadet (ages 14–15), Junior (ages 16–17), Senior (18+ years), and Para Karate. Host nation Nigeria, alongside 30 other African countries, will compete for top honors in one of the continent’s most prestigious martial arts tournaments.
Nigeria Set to Host a Landmark Karate Event
Speaking at a media briefing in Abuja, Silas Agara, President of the Karate Federation of Nigeria (KFN), confirmed that all logistics are in place to welcome the athletes, coaches, and officials arriving from across the continent.
“We’re happy to report that the 31 countries who registered have arrived, alongside more than 1,000 athletes and officials. Technical teams from other countries are also present to support officiating and administration,” Agara stated.
Agara acknowledged the efforts made by the KFN over the past week to finalize accommodation, internal transportation, and immigration logistics such as visa-on-arrival processing for the international contingents.
“While it hasn’t been easy managing all the logistics, I can confidently say we are on course,” he added.
General Assembly of African Karate Federation to Hold in Abuja
In addition to the championship bouts, the General Assembly of the African Karate Federation will also take place in Abuja during the tournament window. This meeting will host top-level officials to discuss the future of karate development across the continent.
Nigeria to Field 60 Top Athletes
The Technical Director of KFN, Dave Jegede, revealed that Nigeria will present 60 athletes across all four categories, many of whom are seasoned competitors with international accolades.
“Our athletes are in top form. We’ve had four national and two regional championships in preparation for this event. We’ve kept them actively competing and in training camps,” said Jegede.
Nigeria’s team includes African champions, Commonwealth medalists, and multiple gold, silver, and bronze medalists. Expectations are high that the host nation will deliver a strong performance in front of the home crowd.
“With our level of preparation and the experience in our squad, we’re confident Nigeria will shine and make the nation proud,” Jegede concluded.
