The 8th edition of the Nigerian Spelling Bee officially began on Wednesday in Abuja, with a renewed focus on improving literacy and spelling proficiency among Nigerian students amidst the rising influence of digital communication.
During the national finals, Mr. Abdulsalam Ibrahim, National Coordinator of the Nigerian Spelling Bee, highlighted the competition’s importance in countering the decline in proper spelling due to the growing use of shorthand and abbreviations in technology-driven communication.
“Today, many children struggle with spelling correctly because of technology. They abbreviate words constantly, and that’s why we started this competition to revive strong spelling skills,” said Ibrahim.
