An inspector from the Police Command in Cross River is under investigation after allegedly killing a woman and injuring two others during a chaotic shooting incident in Calabar on Sunday.
According to SP Irene Ugbo, a spokesperson for the command. The office attached to Atakpa Divisional Police Station returned from a night beat at a microfinance bank in an unusual state. His erratic behavior began immediately upon his return when he blocked the station gate and prevented anyone from entering or leaving.
The inspector exhibited strange behavior after his shift, raising concerns among colleagues. Efforts to resolve the situation peacefully by engaging him in conversation failed.
When the situation escalated, tactical teams were deployed. The officer then became agitated and started shooting sporadically.
In the ensuing chaos, three individuals were hit, including a 41-year-old woman the wife of a retired police officer who later succumbed to her injuries. Two others sustained injuries and are currently receiving medical treatment.
The police have since detained the suspect. Authorities are now investigating the motives behind the inspector’s actions and examining the events that led to this tragic incident. Further updates will be provided as the investigation unfolds.
