More than 400 student-athletes are expected to compete at the second Pan-African School Games, scheduled to hold from Friday to Sunday at James Hope College, Lagos.
The three-day competition will feature athletics, swimming and football across the Under-11, Under-13 and Under-15 categories. Organisers said participants would also compete for major prizes, including a new school bus sponsored by Mikano Changan Motors.
One of the founders, Seun Akinbohun, said the competition aims to combine sporting development with education, career opportunities and cultural exchange. He added that athletes would have opportunities to showcase their abilities before scouts, agents and educational institutions.
The inaugural edition attracted 11 schools and more than 300 student-athletes. Organisers hope the second edition will attract greater participation while improving competition standards and athlete welfare.
Co-founder Aderoju Ope-Ajayi said the event’s rebranding from Africa School Games to Pan-African School Games reflects its wider continental ambition.
The organisers also identified scholarship opportunities through partnerships with international schools in the United States and United Kingdom.
Although funding, transportation, logistics and safeguarding remain challenges, the organisers said lessons from the first edition had improved preparations.
Schools from Kenya and Ghana are expected to participate in the 2027 edition as the competition expands beyond Nigeria.
