Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has called for stronger partnerships with food-producing states, investors, development organisations and research institutions to improve food security and affordability.
Represented by Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat at the 2026 World Food Day celebration in Ikeja, Sanwo-Olu said Lagos could not achieve food security on its own.
He urged greater investment in food production, processing, storage and distribution, arguing that improved productivity and reduced waste were essential to meeting the needs of the state’s growing population.
The governor said Lagos’ five-year agricultural and food systems roadmap aimed to increase food self-sufficiency from about 20 per cent to 40 per cent of demand.
He also highlighted the development of the Lagos Central Food Security Systems and Logistics Hub in Epe and mid-level agro-produce hubs at Abijo and Agege. Construction was ongoing at additional locations to improve distribution and bring produce closer to consumers.
The state’s Produce for Lagos initiative is also connecting farmers to structured purchasing arrangements supported by a N500bn Guarantee Offtake Fund.
Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Systems Abisola Olusanya said the government had invested in food production, processing, cold-chain logistics, rice milling and agricultural training.
She urged farmers, traders, processors, transporters and financial institutions to sustain collaboration, while stressing that the ultimate goal was to improve access to affordable and nutritious food.
