The Helpline Social Support Initiative (HSSI) has called for stronger measures to end child marriage and protect girls’ fundamental rights in Nigeria.
The organisation’s President, Dr Jumai Ahmadu, made the call in a statement issued in Abuja on Sunday to mark the 2026 International Day of the Girl Child, themed “End Child Marriage and Invest in Girls’ Rights!”
Ahmadu said protecting girls required more than preventing abuse, stressing the importance of quality education, confidence-building and leadership opportunities.
She highlighted the Voice of the Girls Parliament, an initiative designed to help young girls understand their rights, express themselves confidently and engage with those responsible for their welfare.
According to her, girls must be able to report abuse and seek assistance without fear, intimidation or blame.
She outlined five priority areas for government and stakeholders: stronger legal protections, safe and inclusive education, confidential reporting channels, investment in mentorship and skills development, and greater participation of girls in policymaking.
Ahmadu said child marriage undermined girls’ health, educational opportunities and long-term prospects.
She stressed that the responsibility for protecting children rested primarily with adults and institutions, rather than placing the burden on girls themselves.
The HSSI president urged governments, traditional and religious leaders, parents, educators and civil society organisations to translate commitments into measurable action.
She added that every girl deserved safety, education and opportunities to fulfil her potential.
