Former Super Eagles head coach Augustine Eguavoen has been appointed interim coach of the Super Falcons ahead of Nigeria’s 2028 Olympic Games qualifying matches against Comoros in October.
The Nigeria Football Federation announced the appointment on Tuesday, describing it as a temporary arrangement while the search for a permanent coach continues.
Eguavoen takes over following the dismissal of Justin Madugu and his technical crew on August 17 after Nigeria’s disappointing campaign at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations and failure to qualify for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
The Super Falcons entered the WAFCON as defending champions but suffered a 1-0 quarter-final defeat to Cameroon before losing 2-1 to South Africa in the World Cup qualifying play-off. The result ended Nigeria’s record of appearing at every Women’s World Cup since the tournament began in 1991.
Eguavoen will be assisted by Nasarawa Amazons coach Christopher Danjuma, while former Super Eagles goalkeeper trainer Olatunji Baruwa has been named goalkeeper trainer. Former Super Falcons defender Ayisat Yusuf will also join the coaching team as an assistant.
The former Nigeria international has previously managed the Super Eagles at senior level and guided the team to a bronze medal at the 2006 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt. Danjuma also has experience with Nigeria’s women’s teams, having coached the Falconets at the 2024 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup.
Nigeria will face Comoros at Remo Stars Stadium, Ikenne-Remo, on October 9 and 13, with both legs taking place in Nigeria. The Falcons received a bye into the second round, while Comoros advanced after a 30-0 aggregate victory over Sudan.
Nigeria must progress through the knockout stages to secure one of Africa’s two available places at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.
