Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso has urged his players to use their 2-1 defeat to Arsenal as a learning experience as they continue their push to compete at the top of the Premier League.
The Blues entered Sunday’s London derby at the Emirates Stadium after recording wins against Fulham and Brighton in the league, as well as Luton Town in the League Cup.
Chelsea made a dream start when Morgan Rogers put them ahead after just 77 seconds. However, Arsenal responded through Kai Havertz before Martin Odegaard scored the winning goal in the second half.
The defeat was Chelsea’s first in four matches across all competitions since Alonso took charge during the close season.
Alonso admitted there were lessons for his side, particularly after Chelsea struggled to maintain control following their early goal.
“I learnt about the game, about us, about what we are doing, what we are starting,” Alonso said.
The former Spain international also acknowledged the need for his team to improve defensively after conceding seven goals in their opening three league matches.
“After we scored, there were 15 or 20 minutes where we had to defend too much and we were struggling a bit to get control,” he said.
Despite the defeat, Alonso said the experience would be valuable as Chelsea continue developing under his leadership.
“It’s game three and this is going to be a long, long ride,” he added.
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta, meanwhile, praised his team’s response after falling behind early. He described the performance as an “incredible” display and highlighted Odegaard’s form.
Odegaard has scored three goals in four matches, including the Community Shield, and appears to have started the new campaign in impressive form.
Arteta said the midfielder was enjoying his football and had benefited from greater consistency in his personal and professional routine.
