Nine-year-old Charlotte Muritala from Offa, Kwara State, is attracting attention for using TikTok to teach mathematics to other children.
Charlotte, a JSS2 student, developed an interest in mathematics when she was about five years old. Today, she shares short lessons online using a whiteboard, marker and smartphone, explaining difficult topics in simple steps.
Her lessons cover areas such as algebra, fractions and lowest common multiples. Charlotte said she enjoys solving mathematical problems because of her love for numbers and approaches difficult questions by breaking them into smaller parts.
“First, I like breaking them into small parts. That makes it easier for me. So I break it into small parts, then I solve it,” she said.
According to the young student, she tries different methods whenever she gets stuck on a difficult question until she finds one that works.
Charlotte’s passion for mathematics has also earned praise from her parents and teachers. Her father said she spends a significant amount of time reading and practising mathematics, although she still enjoys playing like other children her age.
Her mathematics teacher described her as an outstanding student with an exceptional passion for solving mathematical problems and called for greater support for children with strong academic abilities.
Charlotte’s mother also created a platform that allows her daughter to share her knowledge with other young learners.
The young mathematics enthusiast encouraged other children struggling with the subject not to give up. She advised them to practise consistently, learn from their mistakes and remain determined.
“Never give up. They should keep practising every day and don’t be afraid of mistakes,” she said.
While Charlotte has been described online as a “maths genius,” that description remains a social-media label rather than a formal assessment of her abilities.
