Presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress, Atiku Abubakar, has said the 2027 election will be his final attempt to become Nigeria’s president.
The former Vice President made the declaration while addressing questions about whether he would seek the presidency again in 2031. Atiku said he had already decided not to contest another presidential election after 2027.
Atiku has contested the presidency several times, making his latest declaration significant as the 2027 election approaches.
He also reaffirmed his controversial position on petrol subsidy, saying he would restore a targeted intervention to reduce the pressure of rising fuel and transportation costs on Nigerians.
According to him, his proposed approach would focus on supporting domestic production and refining rather than recreating the former system of subsidising imported petrol.
The former Vice President argued that Nigeria’s resources should be used to improve citizens’ purchasing power and support local businesses.
His position on subsidy has emerged as one of the major economic issues expected to feature prominently in the 2027 presidential campaign.
