The remains of veteran Nollywood actor Taiwo Hassan, popularly known as Ogogo, have arrived in his hometown of Ilaro, Ogun State, for his burial amid grief from family members, colleagues and residents.
The actor, who died on Sunday, August 23, 2026, at the age of 66 after battling stage-four cancer, was received by mourners ahead of his final rites. Actress Ireti Osayemi was also among the colleagues who arrived in Ilaro to pay her last respects.
Ogogo’s death came shortly after his daughters, Kira and Lima Taiwo, appealed for urgent medical assistance for their father as his health deteriorated. The family had reportedly sought specialist intervention after being informed that chemotherapy was no longer possible because of his condition.
The death of the Ilaro-born actor has plunged the Yoruba film industry into mourning. Over several decades, Hassan became one of the most recognisable figures in Yoruba-language cinema, earning a reputation for his memorable performances on screen.
According to the burial arrangements announced by veteran actor Jide Kosoko, Hassan’s remains were scheduled for a laying-in-state ceremony at the Pavilion in Ilaro before his burial.
The Ogun State Government also described the late actor as a shining light whose contribution to the arts helped promote Yoruba culture and Nigerian entertainment beyond the country.
As family, friends and colleagues prepare to bid him farewell, tributes continue to pour in for one of the veteran figures who helped shape the Yoruba movie industry.
