Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has said he will not contest the Nigerian presidency again if he loses the 2027 election, describing the upcoming poll as his final presidential race.
The African Democratic Congress presidential candidate made the declaration during a Hausa-language interview on Wednesday while responding to questions about whether he would seek the presidency again in 2031.
Atiku, who has contested the presidency several times, said he had already made up his mind not to return to the race after 2027.
“No, I have said it before, right from this election, I will not contest again,” the former Vice President said.
The former Vice President also called on Nigerians with Permanent Voter Cards to participate actively in the 2027 election. He urged voters not only to cast their ballots but also remain at polling units to ensure that votes are properly counted.
According to Atiku, active voter participation remains an important step towards addressing the challenges confronting the country.
The ADC candidate also dismissed concerns about his ability to govern on health grounds, insisting that he remains fit and capable of leading Nigeria.
His decision has added significance to the 2027 presidential contest, particularly because of his long political career and repeated attempts to lead the country. Supporters within the ADC have described the election as potentially the final opportunity for Nigerians to consider an Atiku presidency.
