A civil society group has urged the Federal Government to permit journalists to accompany troops during military operations across the country. According to the group, granting media professionals access to the frontlines would promote transparency, strengthen public trust, and provide Nigerians with accurate information about security efforts.
The organisation stressed that journalists play a critical role in documenting events and ensuring that citizens remain informed about the activities of security agencies. Consequently, it noted that allowing media personnel to embed with military units, under clearly defined guidelines, would help counter misinformation and showcase the sacrifices made by troops in the fight against insecurity.
Furthermore, the group argued that several countries have successfully adopted similar arrangements, which have improved public understanding of military operations without compromising national security. It added that proper collaboration between the armed forces and the media would foster accountability and encourage greater confidence in the government’s efforts to restore peace.
In addition, the group called for the development of clear operational protocols to protect journalists while ensuring that sensitive information remains secure. It maintained that responsible reporting from conflict zones could help highlight the challenges faced by military personnel and promote national unity.
As security challenges continue to demand collective action, the group expressed optimism that closer cooperation between journalists and the military would contribute to a more informed society and strengthen support for ongoing operations aimed at safeguarding lives and property across Nigeria.
