Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, has said former Vice President Atiku Abubakar supported the adoption of rotational presidency following the annulment of the June 12, 1993 election.
Speaking at a Democracy Day press conference in Abuja, Akume said political leaders met after the annulment and agreed that power should alternate between the North and South to promote national unity.
He noted that Atiku was among those who participated in the discussions that eventually led to the arrangement.
Akume described the annulment of the election won by late Chief MKO Abiola as a painful chapter in Nigeria’s history and stressed the importance of respecting the will of the people.
He also expressed confidence that Nigeria’s democratic institutions are stronger today and capable of preventing a repeat of such events.
