Former senator and daughter of ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo, Professor Iyabo Obasanjo, has officially resigned from the All Progressives Congress (APC), citing what she described as persistent disrespect and exclusion within the party’s Ogun State structure.
Her resignation follows internal party tensions surrounding the governorship “consensus” process, which produced Senator Solomon Adeola as the APC’s preferred candidate for Ogun State.
Obasanjo alleged she was not consulted during the process, despite earlier indications that all aspirants would be involved in a consensus arrangement. She also claimed that some of her supporters were blocked and intimidated during the announcement event.
Although she initially accepted the outcome and even congratulated the candidate publicly in the interest of unity, she later said the lack of follow-through on agreements made during negotiations reflected deeper issues of disregard.
She described her exit with the phrase that she was “leaving the table where she is not welcomed,” signaling both frustration and disillusionment with the internal party structure.
Despite her exit, she expressed appreciation to President Bola Tinubu and a few party leaders who, according to her, treated her with respect during her brief return to active politics.
Iyabo Obasanjo had re-entered Nigerian politics in 2025 after years in the United States, where she worked in academia as an epidemiologist. Her political comeback had generated significant attention due to her family background and previous Senate experience representing Ogun Central from 2007 to 2011.
Her resignation adds to ongoing concerns about internal democracy, candidate selection processes, and factional tensions within major political parties ahead of the 2027 elections.
