The Labour Party has unveiled Mrs Julie Obeta as its deputy governorship candidate for the forthcoming elections in Benue State, describing the move as part of efforts to promote women’s inclusion in governance.
The announcement was made at the party’s secretariat in Makurdi shortly after the emergence of the governorship candidate, Mathias Byuan.
Byuan said Obeta emerged following extensive consultations with party stakeholders across the state, who unanimously endorsed her candidature.
According to him, the decision reflects the party’s commitment to expanding opportunities for women in leadership and governance.
Obeta’s nomination marks a significant milestone for the Labour Party in Benue, as she becomes the first female deputy governorship candidate under the party’s platform in the state.
Byuan expressed confidence that the party would offer a new direction for Benue State if elected in 2027, adding that economic transformation and inclusive governance would remain key priorities.
The Labour Party said the nomination aligns with its broader agenda of encouraging greater female participation in politics ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Obeta is a seasoned politician who previously served on former President Goodluck Jonathan’s presidential campaign team. She also served as Chairman of Okpokwu Local Government Area between 2012 and 2015.
In 2023, she was appointed as a Special Assistant by Governor Hyacinth Alia but declined the appointment.
Party leaders expressed optimism that her experience and leadership credentials would strengthen the Labour Party’s campaign and broaden its appeal across the state.
