The Nigerian Association of Liquefied Petroleum Gas Marketers has raised concerns over the rising cost and erratic supply of cooking gas, warning that the situation could worsen hardship across the country.
The association said cooking gas now sells for over N1,500 per kilogramme, while marketers pay between N25.2m and N26.2m for 20 metric tonnes of the product depending on location.
In a statement signed by NALPGAM President Edu Inyang and Executive Secretary Bassey Essien, the marketers described the development as “sad and very pathetic.”
They warned that if the situation persists, Nigerians may react angrily against gas retailers due to the increasing cost of the product.
According to the association, the crisis is already affecting households, food vendors and small businesses that depend on LPG for daily operations.
NALPGAM blamed the situation on supply shortages, high depot prices, logistics challenges and rising operational costs.
The group warned that the crisis could reverse progress made in promoting clean cooking energy, as many families are already returning to firewood and charcoal.
The marketers called on the Federal Government and relevant stakeholders to urgently stabilise supply, reduce importation bottlenecks and support affordability in the sector.
