Former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan and the Attorney General of the Federation have asked the Federal High Court in Abuja to dismiss a suit seeking to prevent Jonathan from contesting the 2027 presidential election.
The suit, filed by Abuja-based lawyer Johnmary Jideobi, argues that Jonathan has exhausted the constitutional limit for the presidency after completing the tenure of late President Umaru Yar’Adua before serving another full term following the 2011 election.
Jonathan’s lawyer, Chris Uche (SAN), urged the court to dismiss the case, arguing that constitutional amendments restricting multiple presidential oaths cannot be applied retroactively against the former president.
He also maintained that the plaintiff lacked the legal standing to institute the suit.
Justice Peter Lifu has fixed May 26 for judgment, including a ruling on an application seeking his withdrawal from the case over alleged bias.
The case has continued to fuel political discussions ahead of the 2027 general election.
