Outrage has continued to spread across Nigeria following the deadly bandits’ attack on three schools in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State, where about 30 students and teachers were abducted and two persons lost their lives.
The attack, which occurred on Friday, May 16, threw residents into panic after armed assailants invaded Community Grammar School, Baptist Nursery and Primary School, and L.A. Primary School. However, public anger intensified on Monday after a disturbing viral video allegedly showed one of the abducted teachers being beheaded by the kidnappers. The victim was later identified as Michael Oyedokun, a mathematics teacher.
As reactions poured in nationwide, many Nigerians demanded urgent action from both the Federal and Oyo State governments to rescue the victims and strengthen security around schools. Meanwhile, Governor Seyi Makinde confirmed that seven students were kidnapped from Community Secondary School, while 18 pupils and seven teachers were abducted from First Baptist Primary and Nursery School.
The governor assured residents that security agencies had intensified rescue operations. He also revealed that the state government was willing to engage the abductors if dialogue could secure the safe release of the victims. In addition, President Bola Tinubu condemned the attack, describing it as barbaric, while directing the Inspector General of Police to lead a technology-driven rescue mission.
Furthermore, the police confirmed the arrest of six suspects linked to the attack as investigations and rescue efforts continue.
