Spanish football is set for a remarkable moment this weekend as 70-year-old former miner and goalkeeper Ángel Mateos González has been included in the CD Colunga squad for their Tercera Federación clash against Praviano. If he features, he is expected to become the oldest player ever to appear in an official competitive match in Spain, marking a rare milestone in the sport’s history.
As reported by BBC Sport, the Asturian club emphasised that Mateos’ inclusion is not about chasing records but serves as a heartfelt tribute to his lifelong dedication to football. The club highlighted that he embodies passion, consistency and respect for the game, both on and off the pitch.
Mateos retired from competitive football at 43 but has remained deeply involved in the sport. He has played veteran football, featured for local sides such as the Hunosa company team and Turón veterans, and this season has also supported Colunga’s goalkeepers with informal coaching and guidance.
Despite his age, Mateos insists he still feels fit enough to play if called upon. Speaking to local media he said he remains agile and continues to participate in amateur and veteran competitions. He reflected on how football has evolved noting the contrast between today’s modern facilities and the rough pitches of his early playing days.
Colunga currently sit 10th in the 18-team league mid-table with no threat of relegation and no promotion hopes. With only two fixtures remaining the match is largely symbolic offering the perfect setting for a celebratory moment in Spanish football.
