Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) will soon launch a dedicated short code to improve communication with residents, particularly motorists, across the state. According to the General Manager, Mr Olalekan Bakare-Oki, the initiative is designed to replace the existing long digit hotline with a more accessible and free short code service.
He explained that the agency has completed key arrangements and is awaiting final approval from the network provider, while installation of supporting systems is ongoing. Once activated, Lagos residents will be able to report traffic congestion, road incidents, emergency situations, and officer conduct in real time.
The digital call centre already operates with 10 responders and supports Yoruba, English, and local dialects to ensure wider accessibility across the state. Bakare-Oki also highlighted strong collaboration with emergency agencies such as LASAMBUS, Lagos Fire Service, the Nigeria Police Force, and LASEMA.
He further noted that the agency received nearly 300 calls between January and March, although system downtime affected service delivery during integration. However, he assured residents that the upgraded system would soon restore stronger, faster, and more efficient traffic communication services.
Ultimately, LASTMA says the short code will strengthen public engagement, improve response time, and enhance road safety management across Lagos metropolis. It also aims to create a more transparent traffic system where citizens actively participate in reporting and monitoring road activities. This digital upgrade aligns with Lagos State’s broader smart city vision, focusing on efficiency, technology adoption, and improved public service delivery across the transport sector in Lagos state.
