Akwa Ibom State Government has intensified COVID-19 surveillance after a neighbouring state confirmed a new outbreak, prompting swift preventive action across the state. The Commissioner for Health, Dr Ekem Emmanuel, announced this in Uyo on Monday, noting that Governor Umo Eno has directed immediate strengthening of monitoring systems at borders, communities, and health facilities.
He explained that surveillance teams and rapid response units are now on high alert to quickly identify and manage suspected cases. Furthermore, authorities have urged residents to remain vigilant and strictly follow public health guidelines. Emmanuel advised frequent handwashing, use of sanitizers, and wearing of face masks in crowded or enclosed spaces. He also warned against physical greetings such as handshakes and encouraged early medical consultation for symptoms like fever, cough, or difficulty breathing.
In addition, healthcare workers have been directed to maintain strict infection prevention protocols and sustain a high level of suspicion. The ministry also confirmed collaboration with the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and other partners to ensure coordinated response efforts. To improve communication, the ministry has set up an enquiries desk and dedicated helplines for public assistance.
Officials also cautioned residents to rely only on verified information and avoid spreading rumours that could trigger panic. They further noted that Cross River State recently reported the first confirmed case involving a foreign national, reinforcing the need for heightened vigilance. Residents are encouraged to stay calm, cooperate with health authorities, and support ongoing efforts to prevent any potential spread of the virus in communities.
