President Bola Tinubu has welcomed Nigeria’s 91.45 per cent aviation safety score from the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) following its latest audit. The announcement delivered during a briefing at the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority headquarters in Abuja marks the country’s strongest performance under the Universal Safety Oversight Audit Programme.
According to presidential aide Bayo Onanuga Nigeria’s score surpasses both regional and global averages reflecting significant improvements in aviation regulation and oversight. Specifically the nation’s 91.45 per cent Effective Implementation score stands far above the West African average of 61.1 per cent and the global benchmark of 70.4 per cent. Tinubu praised the Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development noting that the achievement strengthens Nigeria’s attractiveness for aviation investment and international partnerships. He further urged regulators to implement all ICAO recommendations to ensure continuous improvement and sustain global confidence in Nigeria’s airspace safety.
The ICAO audit conducted under its global safety oversight framework evaluates member states on their ability to manage aviation risks and comply with international standards. Ultimately Nigeria’s improved rating signals stronger investor confidence enhanced operational safety and progress toward global aviation excellence. The Presidency also linked the progress to ongoing reforms in the aviation sector under the current administration which prioritise strict compliance infrastructure upgrades and institutional efficiency. It reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to maintaining international best practices while positioning the aviation industry as a key driver of economic growth and global connectivity under Tinubu’s renewed economic reform agenda across air transport and regulatory agencies nationwide going forward.
