The Academic Staff Union of Universities has raised concerns over poor welfare conditions in Sokoto institutions. Consequently, the union urged immediate government action to prevent academic disruptions. In a statement released Wednesday, branches at Sokoto State University and Shehu Shagari University spoke firmly. They revealed that lecturers have endured prolonged neglect despite several appeals to authorities.
Moreover, the statement highlighted growing frustration among members due to unresolved welfare challenges. It warned that continued neglect could weaken industrial harmony across both institutions. Union leaders, Dr Bello Musa and Dr Shamsu Kabiru, jointly signed the statement. They stressed that urgent intervention would restore productivity and strengthen working relationships.
ASUU also outlined key demands requiring swift implementation by the Sokoto State Government. First, the union demanded full implementation of the 2025 FGN-ASUU agreement without further delay. Additionally, it called for payment of peculiar allowances supporting teaching and research activities. The union noted that federal universities have already begun implementing these agreements nationwide.
Furthermore, ASUU demanded immediate payment of outstanding Earned Academic Allowances owed to lecturers. These allowances cover the 2022/2023 and 2023/2024 academic sessions. The union emphasized that state university lecturers deserve equal treatment under national salary structures. Therefore, sidelining them could deepen dissatisfaction and reduce morale within the academic workforce.
ASUU warned that continued inaction might disrupt the academic calendar in affected institutions. Meanwhile, observers believe the government’s response will determine the next course of action.
