The cost of cattle has surged significantly, with cow prices in Lagos reaching up to N2.5 million, according to the Lagos State Butchers Association.
Association Patron, Alhaji Bamidele Kazeem, said cow prices in Lagos have risen from about N1.7 million in 2025 due to insecurity, high transportation costs, and delayed ranching projects.
He explained that most cattle are transported from northern Nigeria, where insecurity has disrupted supply routes. Rising fuel prices have further increased logistics costs, placing pressure on traders and consumers.
Kazeem noted that affordable cows are now rare, making business increasingly difficult for butchers. He urged the government to accelerate ranching initiatives, including the Eko Ranching project, to boost local supply and reduce costs.
