The Chairman of the Governing Council of the Maritime Academy of Nigeria, Kehinde Akinola, has cautioned against converting the academy into a conventional university.
He said the institution’s strength lies in its specialised maritime training, industry links, and global standards, warning that a full transition could weaken its core mandate.
Although the upgrade was approved in 2022 under former President Muhammadu Buhari, concerns remain about its impact on training quality.
Meanwhile, the academy highlighted progress in cadet employment and partnerships, as well as community development projects in host areas.
