The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has warned about unsafe products flooding Nigerian markets. The Commission highlighted that this trend erodes consumer trust and threatens economic stability. Speaking at World Consumer Rights Day 2026 in Abuja, Executive Vice Chairman Tunji Bello emphasized product safety.
He noted that rising uncertainty around product quality is weakening consumer confidence and market behaviour. “Where safety is uncertain, confidence declines, and markets become inefficient and less trustworthy,” Bello explained. He added that improperly labelled goods, unsafe items, and misrepresented products are increasingly common.
Bello, represented by FCCPC Director Bola Adeyinka, linked weak internal controls and poor compliance culture to the problem. In some cases, manufacturers deliberately ignore regulatory obligations, exposing consumers to avoidable risks. The Commission warned that unsafe products reduce competition and discourage investor participation, affecting overall economic efficiency.
“Product safety is a core responsibility, directly tied to public welfare and market integrity,” Bello stressed. He explained that law-abiding businesses suffer when unsafe products dominate the market. Prompt corrective actions like recalls, withdrawals, and consumer notifications are mandatory under the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Act 2018.
Bello concluded that safe, reliable markets foster sustainable economic growth and boost investor confidence. The FCCPC affirmed it will enforce compliance strictly, ensuring all products meet safety and quality standards. Consumers are entitled to durable, safe, and fit-for-purpose goods, and businesses must uphold these legal duties.
