Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) factions have reignited reconciliation efforts ahead of the March 29-30, 2026 convention. The Wike-led bloc, supported by several party governors, confirmed that talks resumed on Tuesday night. Tanimu Turaki (SAN) stated that the reconciliation aims to unite aggrieved party members before the elections.
He explained that the Court of Appeal in Ibadan recommended exploring reconciliation to prevent further internal strife. The party’s Board of Trustees, led by Sen. Adolphus Wabara, formed a high-powered committee for this purpose. Following this, the National Working Committee postponed the National Executive Committee and National Caucus meetings.
Turaki emphasized that combative rhetoric has undermined goodwill, urging all sides to de-escalate tensions immediately. He confirmed that leaders from both factions have broken the ice and are exploring resolution pathways. Supporters and aspirants were assured that PDP will field candidates for all elective offices in 2026.
Turaki highlighted that democracy requires a strong opposition and active civil society to ensure accountability. He reaffirmed confidence in the Wike faction, stating reconciliation is achievable despite past disagreements. “Sometimes winning peace is more important than winning a war,” Turaki explained, stressing unity over conflict.
He also acknowledged the presence of elements aiming to sabotage the party, which were addressed during talks. The PDP remains committed to defending Nigeria’s democracy while consolidating its legacy as the ruling party for 16 years. Both factions continue discussions, with the goal of presenting a united front at the national convention. The party urged all members to maintain calm and support ongoing reconciliation efforts ahead of the elections.
